Tatha, I am so sorry that you lost Duncan, but very proud of the life you gave him. With you he finally had the sort of life dogs should have, being loved and cared for. I had a dog once with a maggot infestation, and while I caught it in time, it was a memorable and horrible experience that I sure would not want anyone to experience.I wish you and Leighton the best in your up-coming wedding, much love and happiness. I love that you are looking to the future with hope for helping more dogs like Duncan and Debbie. You are the best!I pray that God comforts your aching heart so that you can move forward in love with your new husband and new future.

I just finished reading your blog all the way through and have to say thank you. It has been so great knowing that there are other people who have dealt/ are dealing with shy and fearful dogs.I recently adopted a sheltie, Maggie, who was passed to home from home and lived under a house for the past month. I have had her a month now and while she is making leaps and bounds of progress, whenever she encounters something she is unsure of, I see that frightened girl come back. It just breaks my heart thinking of what she has been through. I am so happy for you about the progress your Duncan has made over the years and I hope Maggie will be as lucky. I also wanted to ask you if you can recommend any products or toys that seemed to make Duncan feel at home? I have purchased Maggie a Kong, a memory foam dog bed, as well as put her on the Honest Kitchen food products.Thanks!-Megan

I was also so shocked to read about Debbie being gone. I agree Debbie must have had just about a perfect life with you. I work in an office with 3 other women who lost older dogs in the past 15 months. Joyfully, one has adopted a new 2-year old Malti-poo in December (he comes to work with her every day) and the other 2 women are "looking". We sit around and look at dog pictures on the shelter and rescue sites all day when we should be working.... I hope you can open your heart to another dog before too much time passes. -- Donna in VA

It's so hard isn't it? I know Debbie had her happiest two years of her life with you and Duncan. I was so stunned when I read that she had died - I lost my sheltie Lilly last summer and I hadn't read your blog since she died. I hope Duncan is okay - I'll bet he misses her. So Sorry :( Nancy

Tatha, I am so sorry for the loss of your beautiful Debbie...she looks so sweet and so happy to be sitting on her Mom's lap in the picture:) I have 2 shelties of my own. My little girl (3 years old) was sick over Christmas and in ICU. I was scared and worried sick she had something terrible. The test were inconclusive and she has recovered. I know how worried you must have been...you have been through such an ordeal with your sweet baby. Just know that you did everything you could have and that another little angel was needed in heaven. She will always be with you in spirit. Lots of hugs to you.

Great Tatha! Sounds like you may have found a way to gain his trust! I found this same method worked for Byrdie, although I didn't need the tranq's. She now does very well with brushing, and lets the 'Pedipaws' be used for all four paws with no problem. Treats go a long way in them learning that tolerating stuff they hate gets them good stuff. Bea is better too, but nails are still a chore.

I remember the day Debbie wore that green boa to the St. Patrick's Day Parade. She was such a little lady...I also know that holding your beloved pet, stroking her, and gazing in her eyes while she passes is the greatest expression of love. You were there for her in life and there in death-- her love for you was not misplaced.Mom
